The Dawson Community College Athletic Department will be honoring its second Hall of Fame Class on Sunday between basketball games. KTVQ Sports Director Scott Breen will be the emcee.
Women’s basketball player and softball player Kaila Fowler-Clarke; men’s basketball player Gary Baumann; DCC’s first women’s basketball coach Lois Steele; and the 2001 baseball team will be inducted into the recently established Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is a part of DCC’s mission to foster a culture of excellence. Athletics have been a critical part of the college for over 60 years and the college plans to induct new members every year.
The Lady Bucs will be taking on the Lady Jacks from Dakota College Bottineau at 2:00 pm and the Bucs will play the Jacks around 4:00 pm on Sunday at the Toepke Center on the campus of DCC. The special ceremony to honor the new Hall of Fame inductees will take place between games.
Kaila Fowler- Clarke was the first dual sport All-American at DCC. She has set many of the women’s basketball records and also led her softball team to the College World Series. Gary Baumann was the first out of state athlete at Dawson and was also the first NJCAA All-American at DCC in 1967. He scored 1120 points in his two-year career at Dawson, averaging 24.3 points per game. Baumann had over 30 points 15 times in his career at DCC. When he graduated, he held several records at Dawson. Lois Steele started the Women’s Basketball program at DCC and served as instructor, Dean of Women, Director of Special Services, and as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach. She coached the team from 1970-1973 and had an overall record of 37-6 including an undefeated season in 1971-1972 and an 18-2 record in her final year. The 2001 baseball team went all the way to the NJCAA Division III World Series. They are still the only baseball team in school history to reach the World Series. The 2001 baseball team finished 33-16, won the Conference Championship as well as the Region Championship and finished 7thplace at the World Series. They had 18 players on the team that year and were led by Coach Brent Diegel.
The ceremony will take place between games on Sunday at approximately 4:00 pm. Game tickets are only $7 for adults and children are free.
