Playing with FIBA rules was a bit different for the Lady Buccaneers. Longer distance from 3 point range, extension of the free throw lane, the calling of timeouts, an 8 second backcourt rule, and a 24 second shot clock, were all rules college basketball players in the U.S. are not used to. The DCC Lady Bucs were not phased in any fashion. Dawson traveled to Caronport, Saskatchewan and defeated Briercrest College 107-59.
Traveling without 3 players, the 8 remaining players still managed to pull their own weight and make a huge impact in all facets of the game. Haley Olson had a game high and career high of 24 points, shooting 5-10 from the 3-point line. Tamiya Francis scored 21 points, along with 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Ashley Orozco scored high as well with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and a game high of 8 assists. Francis and Orozco only combined for 1 turnover while handling the ball a lot. Ashya Klopfenstein had a double double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, along with 3 blocks and a game high 6 steals. Ervianne Cly had 13 points and 4 rebounds.
Dawson shot well, making 45% from the field and 46% from 3-point range. They also outscored Briercrest 21-13 from the bench, 14-9 on second chance points, and scored 30 points from beyond the arc.
Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. commented, “With all the different rules than what we’re used to playing, I was glad to see our ladies adjust and focus on fundamental, disciplined basketball. We struggled a bit in the first half, but the team responded very well from the halftime report and adjusted to a high level in the second half. It was a solid win to prepare us for conference play.”
The Lady Bucs will open up Mon-Dak Conference play against United Tribes Technical College on Thursday, January 9 at 5:30pm.
