Dawson Community College Women’s Basketball will start the official season with 9 freshmen and 1 sophomore. Former Lady Buccaneer Alexius Foster has moved on to play for the University of Denver. Other notable players that moved on were DCC’s all-time leader in steals and First Team All-Conference selection Ejanae Coopwood as well as Second Team All-Conference selection Sarah Miranda.
In the last three seasons, the Lady Buccaneers have had winning records under Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. with a total of 59 wins and 36 losses. The Lady Bucs have also reached the Region 13 conference semifinals three years in a row. As the only returner, Hardin, MT native Arena Plenty will be looked upon to provide some leadership and insight to the newcomers to guide Dawson to another successful season once again. High profile backcourt duo Ashley Orozco and Tamiya Francis will hopefully lead the Lady Bucs vicious fast break attack and defensive pressure to other opponent’s ballhandlers. Three- point sharp shooters Megan Lindbo of Helena, MT and Cheryl Aubou of France will provide scoring punch from the outside. Haley Olson of Richey, MT will see action from all three guard positions as she brings a versatile attack from any spot. Indiana state native Ashya Klopfenstein will provide brute force in the paint, rebounding and scoring for the Lady Bucs, along with Mar Marata Crespo (Spain), Dymitrea Finley (Tempe, AZ) and Ervianne Cly (Monument Valley, UT).
After attending two well-respected juco jamborees in the Rocky Mountains region, Dawson showed impressive competitiveness and cohesiveness while playing together for the first time, despite only having four official practices. Coach Lagmay shared some of those positives, “The players showed solid poise during their scrimmages in Colorado and Wyoming. At times having 3 games in one day, with some being back to back, I’d say the future looks very entertaining and positive, even with 9 out of 10 players being freshmen. There’s a lot of teaching involved, but if they can absorb as much of it as possible, we will look like a polished, experienced team.”
The Lady Buccaneers will open up against Lake Region State College on November 1, 2019 in the Mon-Dak Preseason Tournament at the Four Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town, ND.
